How to Choose a Wedding Videographer

How to Choose a Wedding Videographer

“…it’s about trusting someone to capture one of the most meaningful days of your life…”

Choosing a wedding videographer isn’t just about hiring someone to hit record — it’s about trusting someone to capture one of the most meaningful days of your life in a way that feels real, emotional, and unforgettable. With so many options out there, how do you know who’s the right fit?

Here are some key things to consider when choosing a wedding videographer:

1. Watch Their Past Work — Look for Current Examples

Start by watching recent wedding films. A good videographer will have up-to-date examples that reflect their current style and skill level. Take note of how their films make you feel. Is their style cinematic? Documentary? Romantic? Playful? You should feel something when you watch their work — even if you don’t know the couple in the video.

2. Consult Your Photographer and Wedding Planner

Your photographer and planner are often familiar with local videographers and can recommend pros they’ve worked well with. Chemistry between your photo/video team is important — they’ll be working side by side all day. A collaborative team ensures your day runs smoothly and that you’re not being pulled in multiple directions.

3. Reach Out and Schedule a Call

A quick phone or Zoom call can tell you a lot. How does the conversation feel? Do they match your energy and understand your vision? You’ll be spending a lot of time with your videographer on your wedding day, so connection and comfort matter.

4. Ask the Right Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask detailed questions:

  • How do they back up your footage? Your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event — your footage should be protected.

  • What are the deliverables? Do you want just a highlight film, or do you also want full ceremony coverage, speeches, dances, and toasts?

  • What’s their approach? Some videographers direct and stage moments; others document things as they unfold. There's no wrong answer — it just depends on what you prefer.

  • Are they prepared to work in fast-paced environments? Weddings move quickly. A great videographer knows how to capture meaningful moments efficiently, without slowing things down.

  • How do they capture audio? Clean audio is what sets great wedding films apart — especially during vows, toasts, and heartfelt speeches.

5. Consider Their Team Spirit

Do they work well with others? A videographer who’s comfortable collaborating with your photographer, planner, DJ, and other vendors helps create a more seamless, stress-free day.

6. Do Their Films Make You Feel Something?

At the end of the day, the most important thing might be this: do their films move you? One of my personal litmus tests is my mom — she often tears up watching films of people she doesn’t even know. That’s when I know a story has been told well.

So here’s the question: how do you feel when you watch my films?
